Very nice model, though I think the weapon is more in the style of the Middle Ages than the classical Roman period. I haven't seen the old pose, but this pose seems to be good.

I've liked your construction work on this piece but i have to say your final pose feels weak and doesnt help the character look as good as it could. Also some more dynamic lighting to help bring out the model more.

yeah, i avoid rigging as much as i can but sadly a nicely posed model looks a lot better. I normally just rig with a basic biped or something to avoid making a complicated rigging system.

Yo man amazing looking model :)
Im gonna offer some crit though.
I think his stance is very unbalanced and detracts from your awesome char.
I did a quick shoop showing the rear leg further backwards.
Possible raise one of the arms higher in a menacing manner.
